Welcome to the Center for Sustainable Medicine
Didi Pershouse, a thinker, writer, soil health strategist, activist, and healer, founded this website in 2006 as a way to share ideas about the connections between sustainability and health care in one place.
The Sustainable Medicine Manifesto proposes that real medicine must benefit the whole system, which means all communities, both human and natural. There is no need to separate the processes of healing ourselves and our neighbors from healing the environment. Didi is now re-publishing chapters of her book about sustainable medicine, The Ecology of Care, on The Wisdom Underground on Substack. Here's the link to the introduction. The clinic at the Center for Sustainable Medicine is no longer active. |

![]() In this richly layered book, Didi Pershouse takes readers on a fast-moving, sharp-witted journey through her own life: from growing up with the neurosurgeon who accidentally discovered the seat of memory in the brain, to working in a smoke-filled office at New York magazine, to her career as an innovative acupuncturist in Vermont, and on to a passion for close-knit communities, grazing cows, and soil restoration as solutions to much of what ails us.

![]() The Land and Leadership Initiative (LALI) was founded with the goal of creating healthier, more resilient, and more empowered communities by focusing on the regeneration of healthy soil.
LALI's courses and webinars are geared towards people who want to organize or lead soil health initiatives in their own regions, and are focused on methods for communicating more effectively about soil's central role in providing resilience in extreme weather events, public health, and thriving economies.
